Protect yourself against fraud
Although, as an active member of the community, it's nearly impossible to have missed this huge issue, I think it's very important to warn people for this.
What happened is a large case fraud in which apparently one user (under multiple names) scammed several members of DeviantArt community. Leaving some people as much as $3000 in debt!!! Money they, most likely, never see back.
Even though the user is banned by DeviantArt now, there's no reason why it won't happen again.
After all, the problem is caused by a loophole in PayPal's rules. So basically everybody that's using PayPal for its business (and that's a lot of us) is at risk.
That in
This journal is for artists who want to get more commissions, or want to open commissions and never had so they don't know how best to present their art, or even for those artists who took commissions before but would appreciate some more tips :D
There are a few pretty important things to consider before publicly announcing you're opening commissions:
1. payment method. The deviantart commission widget takes 20% of your profit, but then again more deviants have points so you're likely to get 20% more customers like that. But don't forget there are people who have paypal and don't feel like dealing with points so if you decide to open commi
Our of curiosity, I wrote this script that makes a graph of a deviant's watcher gain over time, starting with the day the deviant gained his/her first watch.
My graph spans about two years and looks like this:
Interestingly enough, it turns out that the largest peaks correlate not with the days when I received a DD, but with the days when I wrote PE articles and landed in the footer. The DD's led to small peaks, but they are surprisingly hardly noticeable in the graph.
Anyways, thought I'd share since it's pretty interesting to see what your graph comes out to be. :la: All you have to do is go to the page linked above and enter your userna

Being an artist is hard. But being an novice at art is even harder too if you are seeking your own style and development.
I have read some journals that are discussing the issue over this, and one artist 'coping/heavily influencing' another. It's a problem that we face on a regular basis on this website.
But, one thing I do find upsetting, and that is not the case of people being blamed for coping and so on, it's the manner of it being addressed.
Now, don't get me wrong, tracing and coping another artists work for means other than learning or helping them to improve ( either by tutorials for example ) is perfectly okay in my book! But not

Spellbound Species Contest
Over the past month or so I have noticed an influx in the new species popping up from different artists. So I thought it might be fun to host a contest where we create a couple open species for our group. They can be anything your imaginations come up with and you can enter as many species sheets as you wish. I will select "X" winners ("X" depends on how many entries we get . I may select 1 winner, I may select 10). Winners will receive either 2000:points: or $20 cash. (More if anyone wants to volunteer some prizes).
What this means:
A) The species will be OPEN, but only to Spellbound Realms members and Artists.
B) The original creator can

Summary
Holiday break was fun yet otherwise uneventful. I read the 9-11 commission report during the break. This coming week I'll be taking my second cross-country trip for business.
I looked at how many comments are posted on DeviantArt. Right now the number of comments posted daily is about 30% less than in 2011 and continues to decline.
After my last journal I noticed the staff did quickly remove the "folder" portion of the friends API call. Personally I don't care too much about that, I just wish they'd make some form of announcement when they change the API. From a developer standpoint it's very difficult to tell why a
